The Emergency Housing Assistance Fund supports single-parent students in Yolo County, California who are not residents of The Huddle on 5th. Eligible students may apply for up to $1,000 to support housing-related expenses, such as eviction, foreclosure, loss of utilities, and other housing emergencies. The goal of this fund is to provide temporary relief for single-parent students facing urgent housing challenges, helping them bridge short-term gaps while they seek longer-term solutions, including potential residency at The Huddle on 5th.

Who can apply?

Single parents currently attending a college or trade/tech program in Yolo County and Sacramento County may apply for this grant.

Application Guidelines

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be a single parent student with a child 18 years or younger. If that child is 18, they must be attending high school. Live, work, or attend school in Sacramento or Yolo County, California. Be experiencing a financial hardship that threatens housing stability and can be resolved with a grant of $1,000 or less. Be able to provide documentation demonstrating financial hardship (e.g., overdue bills, eviction notice, shut-off notice, etc.

Eligible Uses of Funds:

  • Rent deficits

  • Unpaid utility bills (e.g., water, electricity, gas)

  • Security deposits for new housing

  • Housing-related late fees

  • Hotel stays tied to housing transition

Ineligible Uses of Funds:

  • Home repairs or renovations

  • Furniture and home goods

  • Hotel stays not tied to a housing transition

  • Any non-housing-related expense

Application Deadlines:

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants may apply at any time; however, funding is limited. Applicants should ensure all documentation is submitted at the time of application to avoid delays.

Funding Limits:

  • Eligible applicants may receive up to $1,000 in housing assistance.

  • Applicants who have previously received a housing grant must wait 12 months from the date of the last award before applying again.

Required Application Materials:

  1. Completed grant application form (available on the grant website). 

  2. Supporting documentation:

    • Caregiving/Parenting Status  (one of the following)

        1. Most recent 1040 tax return form (Preferred)

        2. Birth certificate of the child listing the applicant as only parent

        3. Court documents verifying sole primary custody 

        4. Child support agreement 

        5. Government assistance documentation 

      1. Proof of Enrollment Status (one of the following)

        1. Official or unofficial transcript from post secondary institution

        2. Current or upcoming class schedule (PDF)

      2. Proof of Financial Need (one of the following)

        1. Proof of participation in government assistance programs

        2. Most recent tax return

        3. Financial aid award letter

Emergency Housing Assistance FAQs

  • Up to $1,000 per eligible applicant.

  • Yes, but repeat recipients must wait 12 months, and denied applicants must wait 6 months before reapplying.

  • Proof of use is required. Failure to provide this may result in loss of eligibility for future RTB grants.

  • No, scholars must remain enrolled in an academic institution in California or Minnesota.

  • Yes. We can reimburse eligible housing expenses paid within the past 30 days, as well as support current and urgent needs.

  • No. All grants are subject to eligibility, documentation review, and available funding.
