It's about more than tuition.

Overview

Raise the Barr, established by LA-native, UCLA All-American and 4x NFL Pro-Bowler Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr, applies the two-generation model (2Gen) to assist low-income single parent students in Minnesota and California break out of the cycle of poverty by completing their post-secondary education.

Raise the Barr (RTB) collaborates with leaders in the 2Gen approach to provide single-parent families access to a variety of comprehensive community resources such as affordable safe housing, quality early childhood education, empowerment and life-skills, and social capital. This holistic approach has been proven to help clear a pathway to post-secondary education.

Raise the Barr is a partner in the Aspen Institute Ascend Network, a network of leading nonprofit, philanthropic, research, and policy organizations incubating and implementing two-generation (2Gen) strategies across the country.

Theory of Change

Many students drop out just as they are nearing graduation because they run out of financial aid opportunities. Raise the Barr distributes need-based scholarships to single-parent students in Minnesota and California with priority given to students who are within four semesters of completing their bachelor’s degree or one semester of completing their associate’s degree.

Raise the Barr also distribute emergency micro-grants to single-parent students for whom an unexpected urgent financial need, such as a car repair or dental emergency, can create a financial burden that threatens their college hopes. Emergency microgrants are intended as one-time assistance to help keep students in school.

To date, Raise the Barr has distributed more than $250,000 in scholarships and emergency grants.

To help single-parent families improve their standard of living, Raise the Barr is launching a new initiative in the spring of 2020 to increase the transfer pipeline for low- income single student-parents from community colleges to bachelor’s degree programs in the Twin Cities and Greater Los Angeles.
